TAXI SERVICES

Taxi fares •  Taxi Identification  •  Passenger Tips

The official colors of a taxi in the State of Guanajuato are white and green. Each state has its own color. Taxi operations are overseen by the State of Guanajuato. There is no official local taxi office in SMA.

Current taxi fares have actually not been officially adopted by the government. They are a collective determination by the taxi owners and drivers based upon what they feel is appropriate to charge. In actuality, taxi fares have not been officially readjusted since 1995. The official taxi fare for a haul around Centro is still on the books at $12mn, twelve pesos.

Prevailing taxi fares

5:01 A.M. – 9:59 P.M. $25.00 within the Centro area

10:00 P.M.- 5:00 A.M. $35.00 “ “ “ “

Suburbs, Mega and La Luciernaga to Centro: $30.00 pesos. Add 5 pesos after hours.

Add $15.00 pesos if you call for a taxi by telephone.

There is no lawful charge for a suitcase or groceries.

The Municipal Transito department does not set Taxi Fares.
See text above on how taxi fares are set.

Taxi Identification

Each taxi driver is required to continually display a photo ID card within the cab. It is called a “Tarjeton”. This card certifies that the driver has passed a course in safe driving and was taught emergency instructions. Printed on the card is the serial number of the Tarjeton and a telephone number to call with complaints.

A taxi without a Tarjeton is being illegally driven. This may be reported by calling the “066” number.

Passenger Tips

It is courteous to other drivers if you have your fare ready prior to arriving at your destination. Traffic backs-up quickly on our narrow streets.

Do not assume a driver carries enough change for your fare payment.

Mentally note your taxi number in case of an incident or your forget something in the car. The numbers should be on the outside and interior of the cab.

Avoid discussing your personal situation such as upcoming trips out of town, living status, personal finances, etc. Ask the driver for a fare quote before you depart, if you are unsure what the fare is.

Do not hesitate to call to “066” if you find yourself being overcharged.

Complaints about a taxi service?

Transito will take complaints (denuncias) against taxi drivers. To make a complaint you need the number of the taxi (but, curiously enough, not the name of the driver -- although it helps) and the date, time and place of the incident that occasioned the complaint. After that, click here to go to the transito compliements and complaints section of the website.
